Africa could benefit from a further four spots at the 2026 World Cup if FIFA’s proposal for the 48-team version of the competition is accepted. The slot allocations will be put to the FIFA Council in May during their next meeting in Bahrain, where they will decide whether or not they are happy with the places given to each of the six confederations.

All of the confederations will see their allotment increased for the tournament in just under a decade’s time if it goes ahead, with CONMEBOL arguably the biggest winners in the scenario as 60% of their 10 associations will be guaranteed a place in the competition.
As well as the 46 guaranteed places – the host’s place counts as their confederation – there will also be two extra spots up for grabs in a play-off tournament that will be held prior to the main event.
The proposed allotments are:
AFC – 8 from 46 – 17.3%*
CAF – 9 from 55 – 16.3%*
CONCACAF – 6 from 35 – 17.14%*
CONMEBOL – 6 from 10 – 60%*
OFC – 1 from 11 – 9%*
UEFA – 16 from 55 – 29%*.
