A Senegal international reportedly had to pay his team’s entire hotel bill to avoid the embarrassment of his side being thrown out. According to news agency L’Observateur, the African side was on the verge of being thrown out of their London hotel on 23 March as the Senegalese FA could not pay for the national team’s rooms.
Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly apparently came to his side’s rescue on the night, settling the £20 000 (about R324 000) bill. The Lions of Teranga were in the UK for their international friendly against Nigeria, which was played at The Hive Stadium in London. It is believed the Senegal’s FA are currently in dire financial straits, and need the national team to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in order to bring in some much-needed revenue.
Senegal are currently in third spot in their World Cup qualification group, one point behind South Africa and Burkina Faso.It is uncertain whether or not Koulibaly will have the money paid back to him any time soon.
